My husband and I moved from Mumbai to Bengaluru in 2021 with our two Indie cats. For years, we rented furniture, until our feline companions clawed their way through every fabric sofa we brought home. That’s when we realised we needed furniture that could withstand determined paws, and perhaps, the test of time.
Buying furniture is one of life’s quieter milestones. It’s a chance to shape a home that reflects who you are. But every purchase is also an environmental decision, whether we think of it that way or not.
A 2025 study published in Scientific Reports found that producing the raw materials for furniture accounts for about 76% of its total environmental impact, far outweighing transport (9%), the use phase (0.46%), and even end-of-life disposal (2%). In India, where the furniture market is worth more than US$25 billion and growing at 6% every year, millions of household purchases collectively influence demand for timber, forests, manufacturing and waste.
The catch is that there is no single “green” material. Bamboo grows rapidly but needs proper treatment to last. Plantation teak can reduce pressure on natural forests but comes with ecological trade-offs. Reclaimed wood gives old timber a second life but demands careful craftsmanship. Even engineered wood, often dismissed as inferior, has environmental advantages in some situations.
So how do you separate marketing claims from genuinely sustainable choices?
To find out, Climate Action Live spoke with wood scientists, furniture designers and bamboo experts to examine the materials most commonly used in Indian homes. The answer, we found, has less to do with choosing the “perfect” material than with understanding where it comes from, how it is made and whether it will still be serving your family decades from now.
Reclaimed wood: A good choice if handled carefully
Reclaimed wood gives a second life to timber recovered from old buildings, construction waste, shipping pallets and dismantled structures, reducing the need to fell new trees. That matters because forests do much more than store carbon. They also regulate local temperatures, sustain rainfall cycles and support biodiversity. Every beam that is reused instead of replaced helps preserve those ecosystem services.
Yet reclaimed wood’s biggest selling point is often aesthetic rather than environmental. Every piece carries the marks of its previous life, whether it is a century-old beam salvaged from a haveli or timber rescued from a discarded piece of furniture. These imperfections give reclaimed wood a character that new timber rarely replicates.
Working with reclaimed wood, however, demands skill. Hidden defects, nails and structural inconsistencies require careful inspection and treatment before the material can be turned into durable furniture, says Dhwanit Parmar, founding partner of Bengaluru-based furniture studio Alankaram. When properly inspected and treated, reclaimed wood can produce extremely durable furniture, Parmar says.
Many reclaimed beams also come from slow-grown timber, whose denser grain often makes it stronger and more stable than younger wood.

Solid wood: Not automatically sustainable. Here’s what really matters.
Solid wood has long been the gold standard for furniture in India. Teak cupboards, rosewood beds and carved heirloom pieces are built to last generations. But longevity alone does not determine whether a piece is environmentally responsible.
The entire lifecycle of the material must be considered, from sourcing and processing to how long the finished product remains useful, says Shweta B. Kukreti, Assistant Professor of Wood Science and Technology at the College of Forestry, Ranichauri, Uttarakhand.
Take teak. Its natural resistance to termites, decay and moisture makes it one of India’s most durable furniture woods. Today, much of the timber comes from plantations rather than natural forests. While plantations can reduce pressure on wild forests, they are not automatically sustainable. Shorter harvest cycles, monoculture plantations and intensive management can reduce biodiversity and produce timber that is less dense than naturally grown teak.
Sheesham, or Indian rosewood, offers a different model. It is often grown alongside crops in agroforestry systems, creating an additional source of income for farmers while reducing pressure on natural forests. Like plantation teak, however, its sustainability depends on responsible land management, species diversity and harvesting practices.
Other species are also finding favour. Acacia is valued for its relatively fast growth, while mango wood makes productive use of trees that have reached the end of their fruit-bearing life. Neither is inherently more sustainable than the other. The deciding factor is responsible sourcing and how long the finished furniture remains in use.
Parmar says Alankaram prioritises suppliers with transparent and traceable timber supply chains. “A well-made piece that remains useful for decades is far more sustainable than something that needs to be replaced every few years,” he says.

Cane and rattan: Sustainable only if forests remain healthy
For many Indians, cane furniture evokes memories of grandparents’ verandas and breezy living rooms. Today, it is making a comeback, prized for its minimalist aesthetic, lightweight construction and suitability for tropical climates.
The material comes from the outer skin of the rattan vine, a climbing palm that grows naturally in the Western Ghats, the Northeast and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Unlike timber, harvesting rattan does not require cutting down trees. In fact, healthy rattan populations depend on intact forests, creating an incentive to conserve them rather than clear them.
But increasing demand can become a problem. Research from the Western Ghats has shown that overharvesting has reduced natural populations and limited regeneration. Many rattan species rely on flowering and seed production to reproduce, so harvesting vines too early or too intensively can disrupt the cycle. As forests themselves come under pressure from land-use change, the future of rattan depends as much on forest management as on consumer demand.
CAL takeaway: Cane furniture can be an environmentally sound choice, but look for manufacturers that source rattan responsibly rather than exploiting wild populations.
Bamboo: Fast-growing, but not automatically sustainable
Bamboo has become a favourite of contemporary furniture designers, and with good reason. It grows rapidly, can often be harvested within two to four years without killing the plant, and offers an impressive strength-to-weight ratio. Indian research institutions have also developed laminated bamboo boards that can approach hardwood-like strength for many applications.
Yet bamboo’s durability depends less on the plant itself than on what happens after it is harvested. Without proper drying and treatment, bamboo is vulnerable to insects, fungi and moisture. “The treated bamboo furniture [Copper Chrome Boron, boric acid treatments] will have better durability and longevity,” says Sreekumar V.B., Coordinator of the Bamboo Technical Support Group at the Kerala Forest Research Institute.
Furniture studio Mianzi, based in Delhi NCR, follows a meticulous process. Its artisans select mature bamboo directly from farms, harvest it at the right stage of growth, dry the culms gradually, treat them with boric-based solutions and apply protective finishes before the furniture reaches customers. When done well, bamboo furniture can remain structurally stable for decades, even in humid conditions.
CAL takeaway: Fast-growing bamboo is only half the story. Ask how it has been treated, dried and finished. Those steps determine whether it lasts for years or deteriorates quickly.
Engineered wood: Bad rap, but what’s the truth?
Plywood, medium-density fibreboard (MDF) and particleboard are often dismissed as inferior alternatives to solid wood. But from a resource-efficiency perspective, engineered wood has important advantages. By using veneers, wood fibres and residues that might otherwise go waste, these products extract more value from every log than solid timber alone. Their layered construction also makes them less prone to warping in humid conditions.
The trade-off is longevity. Lower-quality boards can be vulnerable to moisture, insect attack and shorter service lives. Furniture that needs replacing every few years carries a far greater environmental burden than a well-built piece that lasts for decades.
Rather than dismissing engineered wood altogether, experts suggest judging the quality of the product and how it is likely to be used. A well-made bookshelf or wardrobe used for many years may ultimately have a lower environmental impact than poorly sourced solid wood that fails prematurely.

So, what should you buy?
The most sustainable piece of furniture is the one you already have. If you must buy new, make sure it’ll stay in your home for a long time.
In our conversations with scientists, designers and furniture makers, one conclusion emerged repeatedly: no material is sustainable in isolation. A chair made from responsibly sourced teak that lasts 40 years may have a smaller environmental footprint than a poorly made bamboo chair replaced every five years.
Likewise, reclaimed wood only delivers its environmental promise if it is carefully processed, while rattan depends on healthy forests and responsible harvesting.
For consumers, that shifts the question from What is this made of? to How was it sourced? How well was it built? And how long will I keep it?
As for us, our search for furniture tough enough to survive a growing feline family eventually led us to sheesham, with reclaimed wood accents slowly finding their way into our home. Four years later, those two Indie cats have become seven. So far, the furniture is holding up rather well.
